WORKING TITLE: RHTYHM AND POÉSIE MONTRÉAL

RHYTHM AND POÉSIE MONTRÉAL is a bilingual documentary, the first in a series, on the Hip Hop scene in Montreal told by a group of youth, ages 18-25, who live and breathe this culture. Set in the multi-cultural inner city of Montreal, we will tell you the stories of artists who have positive and uplifting messages and who understand Hip Hop to be a source of expression for today’s youth. This documentary is about street-level storytelling, engaging both its teenage and adult audience with the inspiring narratives. RHYTHM AND POÉSIE MONTRÉAL gives sound and vision to the voice of people often misrepresented or left out of the media. Their stories are powerful tales of survival, using their creative talents and their words to overcome challenges that might have otherwise lead them down a path of violence.
Dynamic, insightful and educational. With an energetic and youthful look and feel, this documentary series is meant to offer a different and more positive view of youth, and the culture of Hip Hop. The real-life stories of our youth are raw and real, thought provoking and engaging. Their vision of society will also inspire youth today to be more critical and to make choices in their own lives based on knowledge and passion.

WHY HIP HOP?

Hip Hop was born out of a need for expression among a poor, frustrated, largely African-American population living in the Bronx, New York in the late 70s. Cultural empowerment came with the developments of Hip Hop as youth were encouraged to find positive ways to improve their lives through the developments of new forms of self-expression and community engagement.
Hip Hop is now not only in mainstream America but has become international, reaching youth of every culture and nationality and succeeding in breaking down barriers among different groups. With such universal appeal, language no longer serves as a divider. France, for example, has the second largest market for rap music, after the US, and the French rap scene here in Quebec is vibrant, original, attracting, once again, youth of all cultural backgrounds.
Due to this universal uniting quality of Hip Hop, this topic serves our goal of engaging young people of all cultural backgrounds, in both English and French, in a participatory filmmaking process that is exciting, stimulating and educational. We will investigate the meaning of Hip Hop in today’s society through the personal stories of what young people and Hip Hop artists deal with in their daily lives. It is the youth themselves who will document the Montreal Hip Hop scene, including interviewing well known artists, covering community events and reporting on youth programs and youth activities throughout the city.
