FOCUS, c’est avant tout une aventure humaine, c’est la vie quotidienne des jeunes dans le monde qui les encadre et dans le milieu scolaire.

FOCUS, c’est une équipe de jeunes cinéastes venus les écouter et leurs donner un espace pour qu’ils s’expriment, sans être jugés. Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir à les aider à canaliser leurs énergies et à vivre avec eux des moments enrichissants. On a voulu faire FOCUS d’après
Eux, pour partager et témoigner ce qu’ils ont d’importants.

FOCUS c’est l’histoire de leur existence.

Notre équipe a été profondément touchée par la force de ces jeunes et la richesse de leurs expériences de vie. Malgré toute l’adversité qui les confronte, ils ont gardé le courage d’ouvrir leurs cœurs. Nous avons apprécié leur honnêteté, leurs joies, leurs frustrations et leurs douleurs . Nous avons adoré leur joie de vivre et leur envie de participer à la réalisation de cette histoire, leur histoire...

Avec un modèle investigateur et par des récits autobiographiques, notre équipe diverse, s'est réunie chaque semaine pendant 12 semaines avec approximativement 20 étudiants de l’école Focus, afin d'essayer de les écouter et de comprendre ce qu'ils vivent. Le résultat puissant de ce processus était le développement du FOCUS, un docudrame en utilisant les histoires dans la réalité de cette population à risques. Les thèmes explorés sont le racisme, les gangs de rue, la drogue, l’école et les problèmes familiaux.

Après avoir réalisé le documentaire, nous l'utiliserons comme outil éducatif; les jeunes qui ont participé à la création du film seront dans des salles de classe pour mener des discussions sur les thèmes explorés dans le film. Nous utiliserons le film soit avec d’autres jeunes, soit avec des adultes pour encourager le dialogue et trouver des moyens pour continuer à faire des projets avec d’autres adolescents.

FOCUS, above all else, is a human adventure. It’s the story of the daily lives of teenagers and the school that supports them.

FOCUS is also a group of young filmmakers who came to listen to these teens and to give them space to express themselves without being judged. We were thrilled to be able to help channel their energy and to experience so many meaningful moments. We wanted to FOCUS on them - to let them know that they are important.

FOCUS is the story of their importance.

Our team was deeply touched by the strength of these kids and by the richness of their life experiences. We saw resilience in that despite all the adversity they have faced, they still have the courage to open their hearts. We appreciated their honesty, laughter and joy, their frustration and their pain. It was delightful to witness the passion of these teens in general and specifically regarding the participation in the telling of this story, their story…

With an investigative style and through autobiographical narratives, our diverse team, made up of professionals and youth leaders, met weekly for 12 weeks with roughly 20 youth from the alternative school, Focus High School, in order to attempt to listen to them and understand what they are living. The powerful result of that process was the development of FOCUS, a docu-drama using the real life stories of this at-risk population. The themes explored are racism, gang violence, drugs, school and family issues.

Having completed the documentary, we will now use it as an educational tool, bringing youth who participated in the creation of the film into classrooms to lead discussions on the themes explored within the film. We will use the film with both youth and adults, encouraging dialogue about the issues faced by teens today.

“Making a movie is a good way to express your thoughts to other people,” says Allie.
“Doing this movie has changed my life by making me happier. I got to say what I want about stuff that I wanted to say a long time ago but had nobody to talk to about.” Ashley admitted.
“This film was made to give perspective on gang violence and the things teens live. I lived that gang violence kind of life on a daily basis and so did a lot of my friends. The movie is a representation of how it’s bad to be involved with gangs. It made me think about what I’ve been living,” Carmen recounts.
